Chronic Headaches May Signal Loss of Brain Tissue

Chronic Headaches May Signal Loss of Brain Tissue

If you think chronic headaches are something you should just try to live with, the following research may convince you otherwise. Chronic headaches is a term used for patients who experience a minimum of 15 headaches per month. This may account for up to 5% of the world’s population. Subcategories of chronic headaches can include migraines and medication overuse headaches.

When researchers observed the brains of those suffering from chronic headaches and compared these to those without a headache problem, they noticed a difference. Patients with chronic headaches were experiencing changes to the tissue in their brains. The longer the condition persisted, the more brain tissue had been lost.

This is especially true when it comes to chronic migraine sufferers. Migraines are a neurological condition that is usually designated by a headache but also presents with light and sound sensitivity as well as nausea or vomiting. While the loss of brain tissue does not seem to result from the severe pain, it is possible that the loss of tissue may have something to do with the cause of the migraines.

Migraines and Fluid Flow

An upper cervical subluxation can result in a change in fluid flow to the brain. This includes both blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Without the proper flow of these vital fluids, damage can occur. This damage continues to worsen the longer the blockage exists.

Such a subluxation can occur due to an injury or accident that affects the neck and/or head. As a result, proper fluid flow is disrupted. In turn, the brain no longer functions properly. Chronic headaches or migraines are the result. What can be done?

Upper cervical chiropractic is all about getting the upper neck back into proper alignment. This can allow fluid flow to return to normal. In turn, many patients see a reduction or end to headaches. A consult can help you to see if upper cervical care is the right treatment option for your headaches.
