Multiple Sclerosis and Blood Flow

Multiple Sclerosis and the Myelin Sheath

If you were recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, you probably have a lot of questions. Your immune system is attacking your body’s Myeline Sheath. That is a protective layer around nerves found in the brain and spinal cord that enable unhindered communication between nerve cells.

Multiple Sclerosis and CCSVI

First coined as a term by Italian researcher Paolo Zamboni, Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency, is thought to contribute to the development of Multiple Sclerosis. Zamboni theorized that an increase in iron deposition to the brain triggers degeneration of the nerve’s Myelin sheath and autoimmunity. This would then cause a slow down in communication amongst these nerves.

According to a recent study, a vascular condition hinders the routes of normal blood flow possibly causing cerobrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). It is not understood what causes this alternate blood flow in MS patients, but it is hypothesized it may cause iron deposition to the brain tissue via the blood brain barrier.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Your Blood flow

While research is still being done to show the connection between MS and CCSVI, this study shows MS is possibly vascular or degenerative and involves a mechanical component in one of the upper neck vertebrae (C1Vertebrae). The best hope of someone with Multiple Sclerosis to correct this misalignment and restore normal blood flow throughout the body is to seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor.

Upper cervical chiropractors specialize in correcting misalignments in the upper neck. They are able to gently and precisely correct these misalignments without any twisting, popping or cracking of the spine.
