Seizures and Epilepsy, Can NUCCA Care Help?

Seizures and Epilepsy, Can NUCCA Care Help?

Seizure disorders are a serious neurologic problem that are often referred to as Epilepsy. Epilepsy is sometimes controlled, but not cured, with medication. However, over 30% of people with epilepsy do not have seizure control even with the best available medications.

As early as 1989 I was aware that the NUCCA procedure helps with seizure disorders. In 1989 Dr Goodman published a case study in the peer reviewed chiropractic literature about the drastic improvement of a child with a severe seizure disorder, using the NUCCA technique. I was working a research project at the same time on posture correction when Dr Goodman was working with this child at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. I new early on that upper cervical chiropractic showed promise in helping people with seizures.

In the early 1990’s I worked with my first seizure case in my private practice. The interesting thing is, this patient first consulted me about migraine headaches. Her goal was to help the headaches through the NUCCA procedure. She responded very well to the NUCCA adjustment. As a matter of fact the very next visit after her first NUCCA correction she confronted me with this statement.

“What did you do to me?”

That is always a tricky question for the doctor.

I responded, “Why do you ask?”

She said, “I barely felt the adjustment you performed, but my headache pain is completely gone!”

Whew!  I was thinking.

With her permission, I outlined a recommendation that, due to the severity of her neck misaligment, she would need an extended period of care to stregthen and stabilize the misaligned area of the spine. At the six month point in her care her seizures stopped!

How do like that ‘side effect’ of correcting the neck! Not only did the migraine headaches resolve, with time and stabilization the seizures stopped also!

A brief review of the scientific literature and I found six or seven studies in which upper cervical chiropractic procedures had a dramatic effect on seizures. Obviously, more research needs to be done including a randomized clincal trial. These types of studies are very expensive to do, and any procedures that are non-pharmaceutical in nature have great difficulty receiving funding. That issue is a whole topic in itself…

There is mounting evidence that there can be help with some epilepsy and seizure disorders through NUCCA and other upper cervical procedures that correct the head and neck alignment. Sometimes you have to think “outside the box” and consider alternative and complementary care such NUCCA!
