The Truth About Migraine Headaches

The Truth About Migraine Headaches

Migraines are becoming more and more common. They can affect anyone at any age. Some 37 million men, women, and children suffer from migraines in the USA. This is more than 10 percent of the population; more people suffer from migraines than those that have diabetes and asthma combined. Every 10 seconds, someone in the USA goes to the emergency room to get treatment for a migraine or a headache.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Severe pain usually on one side of the head, possibly both sides
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, touch, and smell
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Numbness or tingling sensations in the arms, face, or legs
  • Aura of sparkling or flashing light usually occurring before a migraine
  • Symptoms last anywhere from 4 to 24 hours

What Can Be Done?

The majority of people turn to medication to treat their migraines. Some have a whole shelf full of pills, such as Tylenol, aspirin, Advil, Motrin, and other painkillers that can be bought over-the-counter. These may help temporarily, but the side effects can be dangerous. Things like ulcers, medication-overuse-headaches, and gastrointestinal bleeding can all be caused by these drugs. Other people look to triptans or opioids for migraine relief. Drugs used inculde glucocorticoids, antidepressants, Botox, and cardiovascular medications.

Are There Any Natural Treatments?

There was a recent study conducted that revealed some relief for a teenage girl who suffered from migraine headaches. No drugs or surgery were used. The girl had up to two migraines every week, lasting for about three hours each. She was treated for these migraines by an upper cervical chiropractor who focused on the upper two vertebrae in her neck. After the correction of a misalignment she had in her neck, the girl saw a dramatic reduction in her migraines and the symptoms associated with them.

When the top two bones of the neck are out of alignment, they put pressure on the spinal column and the brainstem, resulting in a migraine headache. Dr. Kurt Sherwood of Renton, Washington, an upper cervical chiropractor, can analyze a person’s neck to see if this is their situation. Then he can correct this problem and help them to get back to living without the pain of migraines. Why not look into this type of care, and see if you or someone you care about can benefit. Dr. Sherwood would be glad to help.
